Winterizing Your Pool: The Montgomery County FAQ Guide

Closing your pool in Pennsylvania isn’t just a seasonal chore; it’s a critical maintenance step to protect your backyard investment. From the humid tail-end of summer to the deep freezes of January, Montgomery County weather can be harsh on pool components.

This FAQ covers everything you need to know to have a stress-free reopening next spring.

When is the best time to close my pool in Montgomery County?

Timing is everything. You should wait until the water temperature is consistently below 15°C (60°F). Closing too early while the sun is still high and the water is warm creates a breeding ground for algae under your cover. Typically, late September through mid-October is the “sweet spot” for our region.

How clean does the pool really need to be before closing?

It needs to be spotless. Any organic matter, leaves, bugs, or silt, left in the pool will decay over the winter. This uses up your winter chemicals and can cause permanent staining on vinyl liners or plaster finishes.

    • Action: Vacuum the floor, brush the walls, and skim the surface until the water is crystal clear.
    • Pro Tip: Clean your filter thoroughly. If you use cartridges, soak them in a filter cleaner so they are ready for a fresh start in May.

What chemical levels should I aim for before the cover goes on?

Think of your winter chemicals as a “hibernation kit.” You want your water balanced so it doesn’t become corrosive or scale-heavy during the off-season.

    • pH: 7.2 – 7.6
    • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
    • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
    • Winterizing Kit: Always add a high-quality, long-lasting algaecide and a specialized winter shock. This prevents “green pool” syndrome when you peel back the cover in the spring.

Why do I need to lower the water level?

In PA, freezing is a certainty. When water turns to ice, it expands. If your water level is at the tile line or inside the skimmer, that expansion can crack your tiles or shatter the plastic skimmer throat.

    • For Mesh Covers: Lower the water about 12–18 inches below the skimmer (to account for snowmelt/rain soaking through).
    • For Solid Covers: Lower it about 3–6 inches below the skimmer.

What is a “blow out,” and is it mandatory?

A “blow out” involves using a high-volume air compressor to force every drop of water out of your underground plumbing lines. This is the most critical step. Any water trapped in the pipes can freeze, expand, and cause underground pipe bursts that cost thousands to repair.

    • Once the lines are blown out, you must secure them with specialized expansion plugs (winter plugs) and add pool-grade antifreeze to the lines for an extra layer of safety.

Should I drain the pump and heater?

Yes. Every piece of equipment, the pump, the filter tank, and the heater, has drain plugs. These must be removed to allow any internal water to exit.

    • Storage Tip: Place all the small plastic drain plugs inside the pump’s strainer basket and replace the lid. You’ll know exactly where they are next season.

Which type of cover is best for our local climate?

    • Safety Covers (Mesh or Solid): These are anchored into your deck. They are the gold standard for safety (preventing pets or children from falling in) and are highly durable against heavy PA snow loads.
    • Winter Tarp Covers: More affordable, but they require water bags to hold them down. Never use cinder blocks or bricks; if they fall in, they can ruin your liner or cause structural damage.

Can I winterize the pool myself?

While homeowners can easily handle the cleaning and chemical balancing, the plumbing “blow out” requires specialized equipment and a bit of expertise. If you aren’t 100% confident that your lines are dry, it is much safer to hire a professional. One mistake here can lead to a very expensive excavation project in the spring.
